An article from Tom Warren says The Popular Groovy Discord Music Bot is being Forced Offline by YouTube. YouTube (a Google-owned platform) has started cracking down on Discord music bots as they have sent a cease and desist to the owners of the platform.

If you aren’t familiar with the platform, Groovy Bot is a platform that allows Discord users to play music from YouTube videos. Note, Groovy Bot is installed on over fifteen million (15,000,000) discord servers. Apparently, Google wants the service to be gone within seven days.

It appears that the developers of Groovy Bot are complying as plans are being made to shut down the platform on the 30th of August 2021. Nik Ammerlaan (Groovy Bot owner) said in a message when announcing the closure that Groovy has been a huge part of his life over the past five years. He said it started because his friend’s bot sucked and he thought he could make a better one.

Groovy Bot is a platform that sources music from YouTube and allows all discord users to play and share it in servers where the bots are installed. The platform allows a social listening party on Discord largely using audio from YouTube videos. Since the launch of Groovy Bot, it has become hugely popular with some estimates suggesting the platform has over two hundred million (200,000,000) users.

According to The Verge, Amerlaan mentioned in an interview with them that he is not sure why Google decided to send the cease and desist now. He mentioned that YouTube probably just didn’t know about it and him being honest had always anticipated Google’s action as it has been a huge weight on his shoulders over the past years.

Conclusion

While Groovy Bot does support Spotify, Soundcloud, YouTube, and other services, a figure around ninety-eight (98) percent of the tracks played on Groovy are from YouTube. This fact was admitted by the owner of Groovy Bot himself. With Google’s actions to push Groovy Bot offline, it is likely we are going to see similar actions against other Discord Bot owners.
